Recency of fire detection (In Hours)
Active Fire FAQs
What is the source of the fire location data shown on the map?
The active fire location data is sourced from NASA’s FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System), specifically the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) sensors onboard the Suomi NPP and NOAA-20 satellites. These satellites provide near real-time data for global fire monitoring.
How often is the data updated on the map?
The map is updated every 2 hours with the latest NRT data from NASA FIRMS. "Near real-time" (NRT) data typically has a latency of 1 to 3 hours, with an average of 2 hours 15 minutes.
For India, data is acquired during the following windows:
For India, data is acquired during the following windows:
- Afternoon: Between 1:45 PM and 4:45 PM IST
- Early Morning: Between 2:45 AM and 5:15 AM IST
What do the markers on the map represent?
Each marker represents a detected active fire location. The colour of the markers indicates the time elapsed since the fire was detected.
This colour-coding helps users quickly identify recent fire activity.
This colour-coding helps users quickly identify recent fire activity.
How accurate is the data displayed on the map?
The data is highly reliable, with a spatial resolution of 375 metres. However, some limitations exist, such as:
- Potential for false positives (e.g., industrial hotspots).
- Small or low-temperature fires might not be detected.
What is the purpose of this map?
The map aims to provide an intuitive and easy-to-use platform for monitoring active fires globally.
