Introduction

As one of the busiest airports in Northeast India, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, commonly known as Guwahati International Airport, manages the daily movement of more than 18,000 passengers. Operated by the GMR Group, the airport has established itself as a leading aviation hub, combining safety, sustainability, and technology-driven services to create seamless travel experiences.

Committed to innovation and passenger well-being, the airport continues to align with global standards of transparency and operational excellence. To further enhance its services, GMR partnered with Airveda to introduce a real-time AQI and weather monitoring system within the terminal.

This initiative allows operations teams to continuously track and publicly display PM2.5, PM10, temperature, humidity, wind conditions, and daylight visibility, ensuring compliance, passenger confidence, and efficient management while reinforcing the airport’s position as a modern, responsible gateway to the region.

Problem Statement

Operating in a region with fluctuating weather, large open spaces, and heavy passenger movement, the airport faced several challenges:

  • Visibility Concerns: Absence of reliable visibility data during haze and fog conditions posed risks for safe takeoff and landing operations.
  • Passenger Confidence: Lack of a real-time public display of air quality left passengers uninformed, reducing transparency and trust.
  • Weather Tracking: Inconsistent monitoring of wind speed and direction made it difficult to adapt to rapidly changing outdoor conditions.

To tackle these challenges, GMR partnered with Airveda to deploy a real-time weather & AQI monitoring system. The solution provides continuous tracking of wind speed, wind direction, daylight visibility, ambient light, PM2.5, PM10, temperature, and humidity — ensuring operational safety and public awareness.
